We're going to Chicago!
Again!
Last year's BlogWorldMeetsRealWorld trip was such a success, we're planning another one! And this time, though we're still in discussion on details, there are more than 2 dozen girls interested in being a part of this fun weekend!
If you're not familiar with BWMRW, it was born when a handful of us girls who have "gotten to know each other" through the blog world wanted to meet for a weekend retreat in Chicago last spring. It was so incredibly fun to get away and to, most importantly, meet up with all these fabulous women in real life and spend some time together livin' it up in a fun city. The original crew last year was made up of Nicole, LeeAnn, Leslie, Maria, Kim, Kasey and myself. We had such a blast and we can't wait to do it again. With more people to meet! There are so many girls we wish could have joined us last year that we are really keeping our fingers crossed for this time around. (yes, I'm looking at you Kim! And Zoe! And, well, too many other bloggers to list....)
We've made the decision that Chicago is what works best for everyone again and so plans are going forward for a weekend in March. I am so looking forward to it!
We're nailing down all the details ASAP, so if you've been living under a rock and haven't heard any of us talking about this, or suddenly decide you might want in on this gathering of great girls after all, let me know. There's still time for you to squeak in and join us. The more the merrier!

Chicago -take two
Saturday
So Saturday morning we all woke pretty early... me, I was still on Sawyer time and was wide awake before 6:30. Leslie had already been up and showered by then, and most everyone else was up and around by 8. Everyone was anxious to get into the city. The girls that had ventured out the night before were especially excited to show off their commuting skills... I have to say that was one of the most amusing parts of the trip for me.
It was so entertaining funny different interesting being with a bunch of girls who are not used to public transportation. Who think riding the bus or the train is just as much excitement on the trip as the city itself. Who talk about getting on and off the trains the same as rides at an amusement park!! And who I overheard numerous times wishing they "had public transportation like this at home". It's a whole different take from when you grow up "in the city" (or near enough to be in it often) and frequent buses, trains, the subway or light rail. To many people it's annoying, a way of life, a convenience taken for granted, and at best simply offers fodder for many odd people stories. It was fun to watch and to see the anxiousness and exciting adventure that waiting at the bus stop or boarding the train can be!
Well we got down to the Magnificent Mile and man was it cold. They aren't lying when they call it the Windy City! Poor Nicole at almost nine months pregnant could hardly keep up with us all speedwalking to stay warm! We made a few stops here and there; malls were our friend offering us the most bang for our buck without having to duck out in the cold in between stores! 
Our patronage included Sephora, the Lego Store, Chiaroscuro (pronunciation on the left), Macys, H&M, and the Disney Store to name a few.
We stopped for lunch at our favorite Gino's. Yummmm.

After lunch; more shopping! I realized on this trip that I am not the shopper I used to be. I think most of it was that I just went in to this trip more wanting the "girl time" and hanging out and not so much stopping in store after store to spend money. Especially when the girls were making stops in Sephora and Nine West and stores that are so up there that I've never even heard of the name. I'm not up on the trendy stuff. Kasey, Nic and I hung back and wandered around the mall and hit Borders feeling more at home making a mental list for good old Target on the trip back. I'm just not into shopping for myself right now. And when I am I'm just not going to be spending $75 on shoes or $25 on lip gloss. I guess if I had the money to spend that way it'd be a different story...
I did get myself a little summer skirt (for less than $10!) as well as a handful of things for Savannah at H&M (because their prices are much more my style!!).
More shopping/walking/being tourists pics:
By about four o'clock or so we were all wearing down. We knew the wait for The Cheesecake Factory would be long (60-80 minutes) so we headed that way to put our name in for dinner.
And then collapsed in the hallway outside the restaurant and people-watched until our table was ready (one of those people were kind enough to take our picture!). We were all wiped out and starving and so glad for the amazing food. And of course amazing cheesecake.
We made it back to the condo after another amusing ride on public transportation, involving a poor guy stuck sitting right in the middle of Leslie's segue into a conversation with Nicole, Kim and LeeAnn about who was/will be in the room with them when they deliver their babies. Which turned into short version delivery stories. That poor guy was trying so hard to not hear the conversation... I was watching from behind the girls and it was hilarious! You could just tell he wanted to be about anywhere but there! Then the conversation moved on to crazy talk about weird smells and food odors being stuck on you and Maria went off on how bad Subway sandwiches stink and that she can smell it on a person even if they'd only been in the restaurant for 2 seconds and we started all joking about giving her a test where one of us would go into a Subway restaurant and then all stand in a line-up outside to see if she could tell which of us had gone in... this guy was cracking up at us. I'm sure wherever he was headed, someone was in for an earful about these crazy women riding the CTA blabbing about childbirth and stinky sub shops. HAHA!
Anyway, we made it home, but everyone was so wiped out from walking the city all day that a couple of girls went pretty much right to bed. The rest of us tried out some Nertz for a bit (LeeAnn and Kim? had never played) but throughout the game the rest of us were dropping like flies. I think everyone was in bed by midnight.
Sunday
We all slept in. I think I was the first one up at 9:15. I honestly can't remember the last time I slept until 9. That is unheard of for me. Even without kids, I am not one who can sleep in. It felt good!
Everyone eventually got up and got moving and we got packed up and out of there by noon. We set up a little mini photo shoot before we left with all us girls and the condo...
and gave our hugs and goodbyes and said so long 'till next year. And there will be a next year! Hopefully someplace warmer...
So that was the end of our fabulous weekend. Well, Kasey and I still had a six hour drive (plus 90 more minutes for her) home, but I'm sure you won't mind being spared the details of that.
I really did have so much fun and it was so great to see everyone and to meet a fellow blogger and to relax and hang out with no kids and no husbands and nothing to do but have fun with each other! I cannot wait to do it again. It is a great thing to get together with people from different areas and from different lives and to really spend some time together and "compare notes" on life so to speak. To get out of the norm and out of the routine and hang out with those that aren't normally a part of your everyday life but are nonetheless awesome, comfortable, hilarious, sweet women who I can always have a blast with! I definitely can't wait to do it again.

chicago -first half
Okay, here we go... I'll try to keep it short. There really are so many fun stories and things I want to remember thrown in all these details though... I'm trying to write enough to always jar my memory, but not so much that it's like the stereotypical boring vacation slide shows...
Thursday
If you recall, Kasey and I left a day before the other girls... we made an extra stop at the heaven that is IKEA. This was Kasey's maiden voyage through the store and as it's been awhile since I accompanied an IKEA virgin there, it was quite entertaining for me! She honestly walked through that place like she was shell shocked... in slow motion with her eyes wide and mouth hanging open not knowing which way to look first. We only spent two hours walking through, which has got to be a record for any Ikea browsing trip, but I'll excuse it with Kasey's back and leg issues of the moment and say that we're already planning a trip back. Oh yes, we'll be back!
When we were tired of Ikea shopping {shhh, pretend I didn't say that}
We then ventured to our hotel, and had the "Super" 8 Experience. I won't say any more about that.
but this was how we watched tv all morning...
Friday
We headed into the city to find our condo. Which was gorgeous and absolutely perfect for us (and insanely cheap for how spoiled we felt!). Well, it would have been absolutely perfect if it had more than one bathroom. 7 girls with one bathroom for a weekend made us all a little nervous, but we survived! But the house... great big comfy couch, great big dining room table, great decor we were all jealous of... it made us all feel perfectly cool and comfy for our whole stay in Chicago!
Kasey and I arrived just as the MI girls got there (we couldn't have timed it better) and all walked around the apartment in awe and excitement to spend the weekend! After getting settled and snacking for a bit, we all took off to pick Kim up from the airport. The other girls split off to find us a place to lunch while Kasey and I maneuvered through O'Hare to find our new friend. Let me just say here that I expected such a major airport to be much more organized and easy to navigate by car and it most definitely was not! 
Boy were we glad to get out of there! And glad to have Kim with us!! We met up with the girls for lunch at Al's where Kim got to meet everyone and eventually we headed back to the condo with full bellies.
To fend off a naptime (and keep LeeAnn awake, who had worked all night Thursday and been up for like 36 hours at this point) some of the girls headed out to find a scrapbook store they had been looking forward to visiting. Maria was super excited to "try out our bus passes!!" so they took off. Kasey and I played a couple games of Nertz and then headed out ourselves to check out the neighborhood. Our condo was basically right in the Lincoln Square neighborhood, which now looking back I wish we had spent more time exploring. There were some fun shops and tons of great places to eat. I'm thinking next time I visit Chicago I might just grab that rental again and simply spend a few days right there, not even having to go into the city.
So where did Kase and I end up? We shopped at Walgreens (I had a horrible headache and needed drugs, and we also picked up more playing cards and Kasey scored on a cheap puffy vest and scarf and gloves!) and Payless Shoes. Yeah, livin' it up in Chicago... whoo! We cozied up in a great coffeeshop and waited for the other girls to come back our way and meet up for dinner. By the time they got back, everyone was freezing and exhausted from walking, so we hit the nearest, warmest (and cheapest) place to eat... McDonald's.
We hurried back to the condo and spent the night sipping rum and cokes and playing games.
I think that was my favorite part of the weekend... just hanging out, getting to know each other, laughing at each other, telling stories, talking about bloggers who we all read who weren't there (oops, did I say that??), and making our own stories and jokes that we'll all chuckle over for quite awhile. We finally made LeeAnn go to bed at 1AM and the last of us followed by around 2.
Whew! That makes me tired just recounting that day... and that's the lesser of the two evils when it comes to exhaustion levels, haha! Saturday was the big one! I'll be back later with more...

home
So I made it back. I honestly thought I'd be blogging more over the weekend but really, with the combination of being busy gabbing away or playing games each night and then just plain exhausted by the end of the days that it didn't happen. We had so much fun and I really did want to relay all of it bit by bit over the weekend... well, now you'll just get recaps after the fact. I spent the whole way home hoping that not much would be going on the next few days so that I have time to catch up on recounting the weekend here. :)
I do just have to say it was so great to see you MI girls, so so so great to meet you Kim -I am so glad you joined us, and a special shout out to Kasey who was not only the perfect traveling companion, but was a champ and pumped gas for me for the whole roadtrip!!
I have lots of pictures to get through and two days of shopping, good eats and girlfriends to rehash so hang on and I'll get to it tomorrow. Right now I'm exhausted (and I jammed my finger packing up the car this morning and it's killing me to type this!!). I'm going to spend a little time with Ryan before bed -which will be calling my name very soon- and I'll catch up on the trip stuff tomorrow! Nighty-night!!

Reasons Not to Sleep in room 322 of the Super 8 Motel of Romeoville, IL
Yes, I know it's a motel versus a hotel... and cheap can sometimes be scary (and hey- Nic and I got a great clean and quiet motel last year for $40!!). But this one wasn't cheap cheap, it had good reviews and the pictures online were very normal looking. And it is clean enough and it is quite decent to look at... and it's quite possible we just had bad luck with the room we got (and the neighbors we ended up with).
But all in all we will be happy to be leaving this "super" 8 behind today!
- When the fan on the heater turns on it sounds like a loud barking seal for the first 2 minutes. No exaggeration. We had to decide whether we wanted to be warm all night or be woken up every 10 minutes by the sea life trapped in our wall.
- Also in the wall are knocking pipes. Annoying knocking anytime a toilet flushes or a neighboring room showers at 6AM.
- Paper thin walls. Add to that a group of young adults partying past midnight and loud men in a heated conversation waiting down the hall by the elevator at 6:30AM and it makes for restful sleeping, let me tell ya.
- The tv randomly decides it's going to try and closed caption --that sounds wrong? but how do you say that??-- for us (not by our request) and yet the text box remains black and empty simply taking away half of the screen while trying to watch The Today Show all morning.
- No water pressure and not a ton of hot water.
- We're basically using little more than thin hand towels for our bath towels.

My name is Yvette,I am 32, single, no kids, I am a Brazillian and live in the South of Brazil, almost border with Argentina, live on an island called Florianopolis.
Its a great place to live, and pretty much like summer weather all year long. So today it was a hot nice day, sky couldnt be bluer :)
I came across your blog ... about 8 months ago, or so, and since then I cant go one day without checking on you guys. I find it awesome to learn about people that live their lives totally and diferently from mine, I simply love to experience new cultures.

Just some notes for my fellow bloggers...
Since I know quite a few of you are new(ish) bloggers, or blog readers, I just wanted to point out a couple of helpful time savers. If you have more than a small handful of blogs you like to read, you need to check out a service like Bloglines if you haven't already. Bloglines or also Google Reader are easy ways to keep track of the blogs you like stay up to date with. Instead of having to run through your list of bookmarks or links, checking blogs one at a time, waiting for updates... just use Bloglines or Google Reader to subcribe to those blog feeds and then you have it all in one place. Makes things much easier if you have more that a couple of blogs you want to check on every day.

If you haven't heard of our first annual (we're hoping) Blog World meets Real World weekend getaway, let me enlighten you. A bunch of us bloggers who are "getting to know each other" through the blog world are going to meet for a weekend retreat in Chicago next spring. I am so looking forward to getting away, meeting all these fabulous women and spending some time livin' it up (as much livin' it up as I remember how to do, lol!) in Chi-town doing whatever it is girls do on a girls' weekend. The plan as of now is to actually stay the night in nearby Michigan City (where there is a great outlet mall!) to save some money on lodging and then take the train into Chicago for the day to hang out.

Since I know quite a few of you are new(ish) bloggers, or blog readers, I just wanted to point out a couple of helpful time savers. If you have more than a small handful of blogs you like to read, you need to check out a service like Bloglines if you haven't already. Bloglines or also Google Reader are easy ways to keep track of the blogs you like stay up to date with. Instead of having to run through your list of bookmarks or links, checking blogs one at a time, waiting for updates... just use Bloglines or Google Reader to subcribe to those blog feeds and then you have it all in one place.
