school boy

So in my blog neglect, I haven't even touched on poor second child Sawyer's starting pre-K
preschool... over two weeks ago! His actual first day was the day we closed on our house, with our final pre-closing walkthru at 8am... so we took pictures in front of our apartment before taking SJ to school....

and then got to take pictures of the First Day Boy in front of our new house(!) before we had to scoot on to his drop off:

Sawyer LOVES school! He was so excited to go because he did so love preschool last year and we've been in to see his classroom here and meet his teachers a couple of times in the last few weeks before class started. I'm thoroughly impressed with this school and the director and love love love his teachers. As does he.
He goes two days a week from 9 to 2, so it's a long day but he's loving that he gets to bring a lunch everyday "just like Savannah!". I wasn't thrilled with full days, but that's kind of how things roll around here (kindergarten is full day too), and turns out we all love it. He's wiped out at the end of the day, but he's having a great time and already learning a ton. I love our conversations on the drive home... he's excited to tell me everything they did that day (which is so different than Savannah ever was) and all about their music class and their PE time and cooking projects and art and Bible stories... he was anxious to quiz me on whether I knew how many books are in the Bible and pleased as punch when he could tell me. They've picked apples off apple trees on the property, they're watching pumpkins grow in the garden, we have a field trip to a farm next week, they earn marbles by being good listeners and good helpers and he's already been invited to a playdate and a birthday party.

He told me after the first week of school, "We're have to learn how to say 'Yes Ma'am' at school to our teachers. It's kinda hard for me 'cuz I forget to say it."
I told him it's something he'll probably hear a lot down here and it's a good thing to say a lot of the time because it's good southern manners. I told him he was welcome to practice at home and we could start saying Yes Ma'ams and No Ma'ams all the time to help him get in the habit.
His reply:
"Um, no thanks mom. I think that should just be a school thing." :)

wait, what? it's already thursday?!?!!

Life is happening way too fast for me these days. I feel like I'm in some sort of time warp where I'm stuck in one place (this house; surrounded by boxes and packing paper and trying to fit one houseful of stuff into a whole different house) while life is happening at lightning speed around me and I can't keep up because I'm stuck in this pause of trying to get our life unpacked.

It's been an odd job because while we have not technically downsized housewise, our stuff needs to be rearranged as if we have... it's just very different space and but a fraction of the storage we had before (closets included) and it's a bit of a puzzle to figure it all out.
I'm planning a little big virtual moving sale on Craigslist very soon... getting an extra fridge, washer & dryer, microwave, pantry, coffee table, rocking chair, shelves, Little Tykes slides and cozy coupes out of here ASAP will probably help with my sanity. Seriously.

Because the biggest problem is, I don't have the room to spread out and unpack and organize. We went from a three car garage and an entire basement to use as overflow, room to spread out and get things organized while getting them in their place... here we have none of that "extra" space and our family room, playroom and bedrooms are all smaller than before. What was in one room doesn't necessarily work in that room here, and so on and so forth. So we have to wade thru all of this stuff, living amongst all this stuff, while we figure out what goes where and what works and what doesn't and I'm kind of ready to have our home back.

The other problem is, Ryan has essentially been gone since day one of unpacking.
We got our stuff delivered and moved in and Ryan had to go to work the next day as he'd been gone for a week and a half... then he left town for three days... then he came home and worked a 12 hr day... then finally the next day he came home from work early, mid afternoon... but it was to deal with our car issues... and then he came home at noon yesterday... but it was to take a two hour nap because he was sick. So this is going on day eight of me trying to figure out this house stuff without him. Trying to make this house feel like our home. Which, to some may seem normal to have it be all the wife's job... but in this marriage and in the six moves we've made, we've always done this together. It's always been such a team effort, we've always worked on this house thing together, so it's a challenge for me to be solo. Not just for the physical work, but the decisions on what to put where and how to organize things, or just to keep the kids entertained... previous moves have been very much both of us. So this time has been different for me. Poor Sawyer has had his fill of tv and video games. I've moved the piano, the 50"tv sitting on top of our thousand pound coffee table-makeshift-tv stand, moved our gigantic three piece sectional couch a few times, moved several pieces of furniture from room to room and moved and unpacked dozens and dozens of boxes in the last three days. By. My. Self.
I can only imagine just coming home from work and magically having the kitchen all unpacked and in the cupboards and organized. Or leaving in the morning with a family room full of boxes with a sectional couch shoved to one side of the room in front of the fireplace and coming home to an arranged family room void of all but one box in the corner and complete with things hanging on the wall. Or to come home to the kids clothes already put away. Or toys unpacked and on shelves.
Must be nice.

Meanwhile, life goes on.
At a crazy pace.

Last weekend Kasey and Evan came to stay with us while Ryan and his boys went to Knoxville for an Oregon football game. We had boys in from Portland and a few down from STL and they had a great time (with a great U of O win!). Kasey came to keep me and the kids company and help unpack while the boys were off playing. Problem was, Kasey and I somehow managed to come down with colds at the exact same time... so while we made quite a bit of progress considering, we -I, at least- were on the miserable side and completely wiped out.
Luckily, it only lasted a day or two for me... Saturday was the worst and by Monday I was completely over it. Gotta love those fast moving colds!! Moms don't have time for anything more. Especially moms in the middle of moving.

Oh, and I can't forget the best news.... (and that's completely sarcastic, btw)
Did I mention Ryan was out of town for three days?
Then I guess it won't surprise you to hear that our car broke down. Yes, seriously. And broke down for real, like I had to call the one single person I know in Nashville and have them come pick me up. Miracle of miracles, I was alone (Kasey was home with all the kids) and it died in an apartment parking lot (I was picking up a dresser from a craigslist ad) and not on the side of the road. So while I debated calling a tow truck, our motor club, etc, I was at least able to call a friend and she saved me. Of course I was on the complete other side of town and neither of us know Nashville, so it was a bit of a wild goose chase to get her to find me, but at least I made it home (three hours later). And then my 4Runner sat in an apartment parking lot for three days before we finally dealt with it on Tuesday.
So now we're car shopping. Because buying a new house isn't enough for one month... we wanted to top it off with a new car too. :/

So that's been our last week since I blogged. Fun, fun.
I am completely loving our house though. Even though it's got odd quirks and no storage and I can't figure the best ways to arrange furniture... I can see that once we get settled in and figured out and decorated, I am going to really love this house. I can't wait for y'all to see it! And come stay with us...
We know we have room, since we housed seven random people at various times this past weekend. With moving boxes adorning every room and space to spare!
Come! Visit!!

we're still alive, i promise

Okay, here's the rundown of the last week...

Ryan supervised the packing, loading and farewell of all our belongings in STL and then closed on our old house last Thursday with a great family taking over our place. He said it was so great to meet them; they have two little girls and are nothing but excited about moving into our house. It feels good to know the perfect family came along and knowing they love the house and are so happy to be moving in helps in the leaving!

So Friday morning bright and early we had a final walk thru in the new house down here, got a few more repairs lined up and squared away and miraculously closed on the new house the same morning. It was kind of hairy there for awhile... the previous owner was a piece of work. Yikes.
But everything worked out, we got the keys and are new homeowners!!
We spent Friday still supervising some last minute repairs and brought the kids over after school and then went out to dinner to celebrate with Mr. Cohort and fam.
We spent one last night in the apartment and then spent Saturday cleaning that and moving all our stuff over to the house.

Sunday and Monday we officially celebrated the Labor Day weekend with plenty of manual labor... replacing locks, a garbage disposal, a kitchen faucet, a shower head, ceiling fans, blinds, painting four rooms (two with vaulted ceilings!!) and cleaning, cleaning, cleaning. Whew!

Today Ryan went to work and both kids were at school for most of the day so I was on my own trying to cram in a bunch of errands and get some more painting done and trying some final cleaning done before all of our stuff arrives tomorrow. We've been camping out this whole time, sleeping on air mattresses and hanging out in camping chairs and eating around the kitchen island with paper plates and plastic utensils... day five of that and I'm ready to have a bed and a couch and our dishes and just all the stuff we're used to living with.

I'm sure posting will still be sparse as we'll be overwhelmed with boxes and furniture dumped into our house tomorrow... and then on Thursday (yes, the next day!!) we will have not one and not even merely two but possibly seven houseguests. Are we completely nuts?
Yes, yes we are.
Ryan and a bunch of friends from out of town are going to Knoxville this weekend to see an Oregon game and some of them are coming in on Thursday before they all drive over there on Friday. Also Kasey and Evan are coming to keep me and the kids company all weekend while the boys are away.
So this coming weekend in a nutshell; we're finally getting our stuff delivered, having a house full of people, Ryan's leaving town, and Kasey is coming to help me unpack enjoy a great relaxing catch-up weekend we are long overdue.

Good Lord, I already need a nap!

kitchy

So, quick, before this house is no longer ours (approximately 16hrs from now!) here is the loooong overdue post on our kitchen. There were bits and pieces here and there, but I never actually posted a full process or after shots of the new look we gave our kitchen last summer.

Of every little thing we did in our house, there's nothing I like more than the changes in the kitchen. For spending just a tad over $1000, I think it's a pretty good difference and a pretty nice improvement.

(and disclaimer: I am without photo editing capabilities so please forgive any uncropped, wonky lighting pics)

Here are before pics:

note the original porcelain tile (with blue accents!)

and the fakey honey oak cabinets. oh, and the icky old original builder's grade stove:

And here would be mid-tile demo:

Sawyer was loving this part!

New tile backsplash:

It all went rather smoothly despite how nervous I was about tiling and grouting. It's tumbled stone with pale green glass tiles.
I Love It.

Painting cabinets:

We did a quick sanding (emphasis on quick) and then two coats of Valspar's Tree Bark brown flat paint. After painting we did four or five coats of polycrylic. Those went fast as it dries super quick. Oh and the four or five coats were only on the bottom doors, two or three on the top doors and the cabinets themselves we only did two on.
I got new hardware... perfect match and it was on clearance!!

Throw in a great new stove and hood:

For the record, if we were staying we would have added an open shelf/cabinet above the fridge and finished off the tops of all the cabinets with molding. And eventually replaced counters. Would have loved to have done that now, but couldn't afford it. Once we did the cabinets and tile though, I didn't mind the old counters at all... actually liked them better!
So all in all, we accomplished refacing the cabinets, replacing the backsplash, added new stove and hood, replaced one light fixture and new island stools (that I scored at a garage sale for $5!!). Total cost for redo was just over $1000. And yes, that's including the new stove and hood.

So here's as is, the way we've loved our kitchen for the past year...
