snow day

Or rather, Ice Day.
No school.

We had a bout of freezing rain last night followed by a 1/2 inch of sleet this morning.
Our school district has a call service if our schools are late start or closed due to weather or some other foreseen situation. I love that! No stalking the scrolling list at the bottom of the news station or searching lists on the internet.

What I don't love is that they call at 5AM.
Keep in mind, the elementary school doesn't start until 9. So that call was four hours before school and a good two hours before we're even usually up. I know some parents need that info early to arrange for childcare if they have to work, but Ouch. Loud phone ringing right next to my bed is not how I want to wake up at five in the morning. Especially when I'm not very good at falling back to sleep in the early mornings...

Ryan went ahead and drove in to work today. He said the roads on this side of town were pretty sketchy, but once he got into the city it was okay. Supposedly everything should be fine and dandy by this afternoon, but with a high of 20 (and a wind chill of 12!) I don't think the majority of the ice is going anywhere anytime soon.

Which means lucky me gets to be stuck in the house all day with both kids. And a messy house. Fun, fun!
I think we'll work on a few kid crafts and make some applesauce.

It was chilly and windy yesterday as well, and I made some yummy soup for lunch to warm us up. It was a good excuse to use up some of the veggie excess we've got around here from the produce co-op. Here's the recipe if anyone's interested. Yum!

Sounds like you might have the perfect day ahead of you. JT stayed home today with us only having one car and our street completely frozen over JT didn't want to risk a damaged car with his job not so secure. I was looking forward to hanging out with you yesterday sorry we all had to cancel but it was for the best, I guess. I am off to watch a bazillion cartoons and break up 20 million fights. Have a good day.

i really, really needed for there to be school today! there are cookies to bake and the house needs a good once-over, but oh well.

i got our call at 5:45am...when the phone rings that early i always feel like it's going to be bad news. i hate it! like you, i was glad that there is a system like this in place, but seriously...so early? ugh. i laid there and prayed that if i didn't fall back asleep, at least the boys wouldn't wake up. and they didn't, thank God!

Wish I had the ingredients for that mushroom soup!XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOOXOXOXOXOXOXOXXXO

that seems so odd... why wouldn't they have YOU call THEM if you thought school might be closed? i guess this way they make sure everyone knows. weird though! we had a snow day here but grandma's daycare was still open. :) a wind chill of 12 sounds lovely, here it's -8 DEGREES and the wind chill is supposed to be between -35 and -45 by tomorrow morning... hypothermia in 10 minutes or less, scary!!
have a good day at home with the kiddos :)

I feel your pain about the early morning phone call. That's usually how our emergency phone tree works too. Only yesterday I got the call around 5pm! That's much nicer because then I can turn off the alarm and wake when I want.
Like mom said...with a wind chill of 5 I won't be outside enjoying this extra day off! I'll probably be like the kids. I'll be a little stir crazy by the time Gabe gets home from work.
