do you do this?

When you spend money at a store, do you make yourself feel better by dismissing the big ticket items, or the regular necessities, the "givens", and subtract them from your total in your head? Like if you take those items out of the equation and look at the rest of it it doesn't seem so bad?
For instance when you go grocery shopping and you have diapers and formula in the cart and your total at the register is $100... in my mind I would say Ouch! Oh, but twenty of that was diapers and twenty of that was formula, so in reality I only spent $60.

Case in point; this morning I went to Target to buy an on sale cupboard for extra pantry storage in our basement. Somehow other random things made it into my cart... a clearance shirt and shoes for SJ, some desk organization stuff, some household products, gum. (I have no idea how they all got in there, but they did). So at the register, when my total came to $83, my first thought was Ouch!
My second thought is, But the cupboard was $40, so I really only spent $43 on other stuff at Target and that's pretty good for me!

Does anyone else do this or am I just troubled?....

i'm so good at rationalizing my purchases, it's scary. :)

I do this, too. You are not alone.

As for how they get in the cart, they're suicidal - they jump right off the shelf into your basket. Powdered donuts do this to my mom's basket all the time. In my cart, it's shoes.

I totally do the same thing!! ha ha!

I went to Walmart today and my total was around $50 for groceries. The girls were a little feisty so we shopped as quickly as possible. When I paid - I was seriously thinking "wow! I did great today!"
Maybe I should stick to my list more often.

I don't do that, I just generally say ouch and get annoyed that I "had" to buy necessities! I like buying fun stuff! Shoes and a clearance shirt are way more fun than diapers and formula! Oh, I can't wait until there is a day without diapers and formula!

When you are working with the tightest budget, every penny counts. Especially the necessities.....

I love Target. I cannot walk out of there without spending $50 minimum. It's purely ridiculous. The other night I went to get a gift for J it cost $43.99 I spent $98 total. I got some "other" stuff and totally justified it.

I only do this when I have to justify purchases to my husband. :) But we NEEDED this!

Love your blog, by the way...

and I still chuckle whenever I literally eat ice cream.
