As I'm making lunch today I'm thinking (obviously we're hard up for entertainment today) about how my husband throws this together one way, while I have another specific and deliberate order which is the only order that makes perfect sense to me. So I thought I'd quiz you all...
Do you
a. add cheese, then butter, then milk
b. add cheese, then milk, then butter
c. add butter, then cheese, then milk
d. add butter, then milk, then cheese
e. add milk, then butter, then cheese
f. add milk, then cheese, then butter
g. i don't pay attention/do it different every time
...mac and cheese in a box, if you're wondering.

I definitely add the butter first, then probably the milk and then the cheese. I hate lumpy cheese chunks!!
D or E. I always add the cheese last, I think.
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
d or e... the cheese is ALWAYS last!
Butter then cheese, no milk! I like it thicker. But here we call it Kraft Dinner or KD!
For the record, I tried giving it to M for lunch the other day and he spat it out. WTH?
I'm an E. But now I want to know how you prepare it and how does Ryan do it ?
butter, cheese, milk. Always. That way I can determine how milky I want it.
We usually use Annie's mac n' cheese. I mix the milk and cheese together in a bowl, and then pour it in (I follow the instructions on thier box). I sometimes do butter and sometimes don't.
D, for sure. What a funny thought, but I too am very particular about how it's done. My hubby doesn't do it right.
i think i do c) butter, cheese, then milk. then i stick the fork into the butter and use that to stir with. i don't know if i do it the same everytime or not though...
To my Annie's mac I add: Nancy's plain yogurt, about 3/4 the cheese packet, and a dab of butter or ev coconut oil. Oh and sometimes I mix in some pureed butternut squash and/or a little goat cheese. Yum!
B--I always put the cheese in first, but it doesn't clump. I make sure to add plenty of butter to make it saucy. I never measure the butter or the milk either.
D. butter, milk, cheese. I always add the butter first, so it will melt in the hottest temp. Mix that a few times. Add the milk, mix that in and then add the cheese.
And the "winner" is... Erin Miller! And Ryan, but he doesn't count since I've trained him in that pattern.
C. is the correct --er I mean, is my answer.
Butter (so it gets the most heat and melts sooner), then cheese, and then the milk poured over the cheese powder (to start spreading the cheese around more evenly and to judge how milky I want it). I feel like my cheese stays lumpy if I add it last.
I also think this is hilarious... the most comments I've received in a long time! All because of a little blue box. (or not blue in the case of Annie's box. The few times I've made that it's turned out with chunky cheese because I forget to mix it ahead of time! I can't get my kids to eat Annie's... they've been spoiled with the fakeness of Kraft. haha!)
C is the way we (I) make it if I am making it from a box & not my own homemade :) I have to agree w/ a few others that commented, that way I can determine how cheesy it is.
butter, then cheese. no milk. i like it a bit thicker. my husband adds milk and it gets a little 'milky' for me.
I know I'm late, but I had to weigh in (by the way, love your blog, found it thru another one) your kids are beautiful!
My husband "taught me" the "correct" way when we first got married. Melt the butter, add milk, then the cheese, stir until it's smooth and then add the mac back in... TOO MUCH WORK! I throw it all in, give it a quick whirl and then add the mac back in, I have 3 starving boys waiting to be fed.
