my favorite valentine

I thought this meme was fun to do today, celebrating My Valentine... Since it's Thoughts for Thursday, think on these questions...those that apply, and give your own answers. I'm always curious of others' "romantic" stories. I think it would be especially fun to reflect on these questions after you've been married for 10, 15, 30 years!!

About my Valentine...

1. Where/How did you meet?
The short version of the long story is the fact that Ryan played soccer with some of my friends and I had seen him around at the games... we didn't officially meet until I heard he was going to be at a fellow friend's barbeque and I made a point of being there to actually rub elbows with him.

2. How long after you met did you start dating?
We met on a Friday night, he emailed me on Saturday, we hung out with mutual friends on Sunday, Monday I invited him to come out to a comedy club with some friends and me the next night, so Tuesday was our first "date". After we left my friends at the comedy club, we went for a walk around a park. There are probably only a handful of days that we have not seen each other since that night, so pretty much we were "dating" from the day we met.

3. How long till your first kiss and who kissed who first?
7 days after we met. He finally kissed me after a day of crabbing on a boat at the beach... LOL!

4. Who said I love you first?
We really both pretty much said it at the same time. Awww...

5. How long did you date before you were engaged?
We got engaged 6 months to the day, from the night we met.

6. How long was your engagement?
6 months.
We met on June 1st, 2001; got engaged on December 1st, 2001; and got married on May 31st, 2002... just one day short of knowing each other for one full year.

7. How long have you been married?
Almost 6 years.

8. What is your anniversary?
May 31

9. How many people came to your wedding reception?
ummm... 175??

10. What kind of cake did you serve?
Layers of different flavors... I think the fave was poppyseed with raspberry filling.

11. Where was your wedding?
At our church in Lake Oswego.

12. Did your spouse cry during the ceremony?
I think he may have teared up.

13. Most special moment of your wedding day?
I don't think I can pick one moment. I was just happy to be there. Just a happy, happy day.

14. Where did you go on your honeymoon?
The San Juan Islands in Washington.

15. Greatest strength as a couple?
What a great question! I think our greatest strength is our devotion to each other. We acknowledge that everything else in our life is secondary to our relationship.

16. Greatest challenge as a couple?
Um.... Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus?!

17. What side of the bed do you sleep on?
The right side.

18. What size is your bed?
Queen

19. Who literally pays the bills?
He does

20. Who does the laundry?

I wash it all, but we both usually end up putting it away... days later, haha

21. Who does the dishes?

He probably does more. I hate dishes.

22.Who mows the lawn?
He does.

23. Who cooks dinner?

I usually do, but Ryan's a better cook.

24. Who is more stubborn?

He is.

25. Who is smarter?

Definitely he is. The amount of (useless) information in his brain is unbelievable... Mr. Trivia.

26. Who is more sensitive?

Me. Definitely me.

27. What is your song?
I don't think we have one.

28. What did you dance your first dance to?
Let's Stay Together by Al Green

29. What kind of flowers did you have at your wedding?
Tulips

30. Did your valentine bring you flowers today?
Yes, as a matter of fact, I was happily surprised with a bouquet on my kitchen table when I came downstairs this morning. I can't remember the last time I got flowers. Mmmm, they smell good!!

1. We met in grade school. I have the vaguest memories of him and a friend teasing (or I like to say bullying) me on the playground in 1st or 2nd grade. He denies it.

2. We started dating the Christmas after I graduated high school (1987).

3. The first kiss...the first night. He was just talking on and on, so I said, "Kiss me." And he did.

4. He told me he loved me first. But he quickly followed it up with, "Don't freak out or anything. I love a lot of people." What a romantic! I tease him about this often.

5. We dated around three and a half years. It was all good.

6. We were engaged around a year. Way too long.

7. We've been married fifteen years.

8. Our anniversary is June 20.

9. We truly don't remember how many people were at our reception (or wedding, for that matter). I just know that we had a great time.

10. We served white cake, as I recall. John's sister Nancy made it. It was beautiful. I was grateful.

11. We got married at the Methodist Church.

12. We both cried.

13. The most special moment seems like it should involve the vows, which are so important and will last forever. But what I remember most is the dancing. We just has so much free-loving fun dancing!

14. We went to the Oregon Coast for our honeymoon. We stayed in my Dad's house while he vacationed. That came to be only after our Bahama honeymoon turned out to be a scam. To this day, we've never gotten our money back.

15. Our greatest strength...He is the pessimist (he'll say realist) and I'm the optimist. I truly think you need a little of both.

16. Finding time to spend together is our biggest challenge.

17. I sleep on the left side. We just switched.

18. We have a queen bed.

19. I pay the bills with the money he earns.

20. I do the laundry. Please, please, John, don't touch the laundry.

21. I was the dishes after he prepares the meals. Great trade.

22. John mows. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

23. See 21 above.

24. I really only think of my children as stubborn.

25. He's smarter. (Although half the time I think he makes things up.)

26. John is pretty sensitive, but if you want to know who cries more, it's me.

27. Our song?

28. I don't remember what we danced our first married dance to. I bet John does. That's the kind of thing he remembers. Songs, not dances.

29. I was going to bag the whole flower thing, so John's mom saved the day. I think we had some roses from her garden and she made silk flower posies and boutineres (sp) for the wedding party. Again, thank you.

30. I got no flowers. And truthfully, I really don't care. Don't get me wrong, I would have a big smile on my face to have received them, but I just don't really care too much.

whew.
